| If you would speak, I would listen. It may take a long time for me to become a good listener, but I would love to practice if you would speak. |

| Today is that day I buy a token- a commitment in longevity. I'm so excited I can't eat or think or stop smiling. I want something to be there- in the room- when we're standing before one another. I want it to be a sacred worship. And I want kids, friends, acquaintances all to be witnesses of it. I want them all to participate in our celebration and find a softness inside that resonates. |

| I enter our apartment like a cartoon character about to temporarily ruin himself running into a locked door. I do this every time for the off chance that someone will be waiting with homework to burst in distraction. But I burst into an absence of colour, a heavy breeze, and a frightened curtain. The bright curtain snake floats above the windowsill. It shakes and slithers through the air. Its hiss comes on a heavy breeze to the welcome mat where my shoes stand, communicating a tempting stillness. I think about finding a scissor and setting it free, but deep set reason dulls my impulse.
I walk to the windowsill and sit down. The curtain is suspended above my head, and a force of air reminds me of the open window. I notice the downward view from my second story apartment complex. There are flowers growing through the pavement and distracted people carrying homework. My fingers twitch slightly as I unscrew the screen. Every day the ledge appeared to be gravel and red brick, but you can never be entirely sure about these things.
You find my shoes on the outside of the screen and tell them it's because Mommy's a writer. |
